An undefeated season has led the Girl’s Basketball team to the District Playoffs. The team ended their regular season with a 16-0 record and now prepare for challenges that are to come.
Steve White, the assistant coach, commented on the undefeated season, and what it means for them as a team.
“I think the undefeated season really is a testament to all the hard work that the players and coaches put in over the past year,” White said. “It really is something that the kids were able to accomplish through teamwork.”
Katelyn Griebel, a senior on the team, and Kierstin Riley, a junior, both said that having an undefeated season is an awesome thing to have accomplished and it is nice to see that hard work pays off.
With Basketball being a team sport, it is important to work together cohesively as a team according to Riley, especially with Districts coming up. She said something she personally will work and improve upon is not letting her nerves or the game get to her head and playing her hardest.
Griebel explained that practice is an important aspect of the game.
“Continuing to work hard through practices is key,” Griebel said. “You play as you practice. It all comes down to playing like we know how to.”
White added that the mindset going into Districts will be to take care of business.
“We’re going to be favored in these games and we’re gonna have them at home. We have to be confident but not overly confident,” White said.
Mike Carlson, who is the head coach, also commented on how the team will look at these next few games.
“We have two games to win in order to win Districts,” Carlson said. “We’ll have a couple tough games but hopefully we can get the job done.
White also mentioned that practices will look pretty similar to what they have been doing all season. He said that Carlson does a nice job laying out the other team and coming up with a game plan to counter their offense and defense.
“Some practices will be focused on individual skills,” Carlson said. “Others will be more focused on the team that we will be facing and how we can stop them.”
For some, these next few games to come are crucial as many of the players on the team are seniors.
“Since I’ve been playing basketball for over ten years, it would be awesome to go out with a bang and win Districts and continue through States,” Griebel said.
“I think for the seniors they realize that every game at this point could be their last,” White said. “I think they’re going to want to extend their season as long as possible.”
“I think we need to not let it get to our heads that we are undefeated but also work hard to be better. I think we’ll do pretty good,” Riley said.
The Girl’s Basketball Team’s first District game will be on Wednesday, March 10th against Karns City.
