What If It’s Us reminds readers of summer love
What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli was one of the best books I have read in a while, beginning with the title that is a reference to a Dear Evan Hansen song. Arthur and Ben meet in a New York City post office, but after a proposal, the two split up, not knowing who the other is or how to get back in touch.
Arthur is in New York for the summer, helping at his mother’s law firm. He believes in fate, love, and the universe. He believes that meeting Ben was not a mere coincidence but an act of the universe, believing that they will meet again if that is what the universe wants.
Ben has lived in New York his whole life, and this meeting with a boy was just a coincidence. He doesn’t believe in love, fate, or the universe because otherwise why would he be dropping off his ex-boyfriend’s things?
In What If It’s Us, Silvera and Albertalli turn an idea into a beautiful story. They came up with the idea while messaging, and it has become a new favorite book of mine. Ben and Arthur find their way back to each other, but it takes six says and many attempts.
Anonymous Content, which was the same company that was responsible for 13 Reasons Why, has already acquired the screen rights for this book, which as a lover of Albertalli and Silvera, I am super excited. I highly recommend this book to find out how Ben and Arthur end up meeting again in a perfectly imperfect way.
